Our Philosophy 

To provide the residents of Long Island and the surrounding area with quality horticultural products and services to enhance and improve the quality of their living environment and to exceed their expectations when doing so.

Our History

Our history begins with a young man named Martin Viette. Martin came to America from Switzerland in 1920 at the age of 16 as an apprentice gardener on the Havemayer estate on Long Island's Gold Coast. Poor, but hard working, Martin learned so much so quickly that he was loaned out to the head gardeners of other Long Island estates. In 1929, he started a small nursery in Syosset. As his business quickly outgrew that location, he moved his operation to a 42-acre nursery, our present location in East Norwich, NY. In 1962, Martin's son, André, took over the family business and continued his father's tradition of hybridization until 1976 when he sold Martin Viette Nurseries to Emily and Russell Ireland. The next chapter…The Ireland family had owned and operated a garden center and landscape business on the south shore of Long Island. After the purchase of Martin Viette Nurseries, the Ireland’s moved, with their two young sons, to the north shore. Their landscape business, Ireland-Gannon Associates, Inc. came to the East Norwich facility, as well. Ireland-Gannon opened another office in Stony Brook, NY, to better serve eastern Long Island customers. Ireland-Gannon's award-winning designs can be seen at the annual Macy’s Spring Flower Show, the Americana Manhasset, the Wheatley Plaza Shopping Center, and thousands of homes across Long Island. Today, the third generation of Ireland’s -- Russell, III, and Michael continue to do business under the Martin Viette name. The family’s commitment to providing the Long Island and metropolitan communities with only the highest quality plant material, the friendliest and most knowledgeable service, and an enjoyable shopping experience in a serene park-like setting, is deeply rooted and stronger than ever. Martin Viette continues to grow, providing a garden club and a kids club with lectures, hands-on workshops and events, and a beautiful horticultural center where customers can share the joys and passion of gardening. With an expanded garden accent display area featuring the largest selection of imported statuary and pottery on Long Island, Martin Viette Nurseries is the premier horticultural center on Long Island today.
